Fun Things To Do in Arcata, CA

Back in the gold rush days, when the town was known as Uniontown, a visitor would find Arcata's Plaza crowded with prospectors looking for provisions and recreation. Today, the City of Arcata is alive with a new breed, still diverse and independent minded, but now committed to preserving and protecting the beauty and bounty found just outside of town. Arcata Community Redwood Forest was California’s first city-owned forest, and its ten miles of trails, canopied by redwoods and fern groves, are testament to the local commitment for Arcata’s spectacular surroundings. Hiking, bird and whale watching, cycling and a tour of the 154-acre Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary make for an educational and invigorating outing. Arcata is best known as the home to Humboldt State University, which is just a short walk from Arcata square. HSU is the northernmost campus in the California State University system.

Downtown awaits visitors with shops surrounding the Plaza, and a selection of enticing restaurants, cafes, and comfortable lodging make Arcata an engaging weekend getaway. Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday from April to October, is a fun, musical event where local bakers, growers and artisans ply their wares. Click here to discover Arcata events, entertainment, music and festivals. The annual Kinetic Sculpture Race is held in May, Pastels on the Plaza takes place in October, Arcata Bay Oyster Festival is in June, and the famous Light Christmas Festival is a must in December.
