Welcome To Avila Beach, California

Tucked away on a remote Pacific cove, the town of Avila Beach is a seaside gem. Its clear blue waters and tranquil sandy beaches are protected from wind and fog by gently sloping hills, keeping the harbor dependably sun-filled and inviting. Seaside fun out on the water or back on the beach is pleasantly warmer than just a few miles to the north. Once a Unocal oil storage facility, Avila Beach suffered a massive oil spill in the 1990’s. A thirty million dollar settlement paid to replace contaminated soil with clean fill and then to rebuild Avila from the ground up, many structures as replicas of Avila Beach’s historical buildings. For leisurely strolls out over the water, two of Avila Beach’s three piers are open to the public, offering the best bay views as well as shopping and dining, including fresh seasonal seafood. For family outings with kids, Avila’s rebirth includes a state of the art playground. The Avila Beach Golf Course offers a front nine situated among the oaks with a back nine played over by the tidal estuary. Avila is also known for its hot mineral spring baths. The Point San Luis Light Station, near Avila Beach, is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Visitors are invited to join a docent for a Saturday morning, 3.5-mile hike. Besides the lighthouse, the fog signal building, oil house, two cisterns, two duplexes, and a privy remain. Avila Beach is tucked away near San Luis Obisbo.
