Fun Things To Do in Carmel, CA

Carmel-by-the-Sea, once an unremarkable way station between California’s busy cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, is now a destination known internationally for its spectacular coastal beauty, its support of the fine arts, and its unique small-town charm and elegance. Father Junipero Serra, father of California missions, was among Carmel's earliest European settlers, building a mission here in 1771. An active parish today, the Basilica is open to the public for self-guided and docent led tours. At the turn of the century, Carmel had already attracted academic and artistic people. A surge in this population of creative people occurred after the 1906 earthquake. Displaced writers, poets and painters, musicians and actors relocated to Carmel, a path still followed to this day. Carmel’s eccentricity and love of whimsy is evident today in its many storybook cottages. Hugh Comstock built the first of these Hansel and Gretel cottages in 1924. Their tiny, fairytale style, built of native chalk rock, wood, redwood shakes and hand-carved timber and tile, are still charming residences today. Plan to spend a full day in town exploring the studios and galleries, antique shops, boutiques and small intimate cafes and restaurants to be discovered in Carmel’s secluded alleyways, courtyards and arcades on and around Ocean Avenue. Plan to stay a night or two in comfort and style in this town known for its world-class, gracious hospitality. Carmel-by-the-Sea is 26 miles north of Big Sur.
