The historic mining town of Dutch Flat is located a few miles up highway 80. It was first settled in 1851 by a group of German miners who used hydraulic mining to unearth an enormous amount of gold, but it also caused severe environmental destruction. The town is a well preserved example of early gold rush settlements. Amongst the oldest buildings are Odd Fellows Hall, Dutch Flat Hotel, and the Trading Post, which were all built in the 1850s.
