Fun Things To Do in Los Olivos, CA

The small town of Los Olivos is nestled in the remote Santa Ynez Valley, just over San Marcos Pass from Santa Barbara and just down the road from Solvang. This picturesque and photogenic little town was featured prominently in the 2004 Oscar winning movie “Sideways,” about romance and adventures in the wine country. Due in part to the movie’s critical and commercial success, Los Olivos has become a popular vacation and wine tasting destination. The town is an idyllic spot to stroll and refresh after touring the many nearby wineries. Founded in 1861, Los Olivos had stagecoach service from 1865 until 1911, and was connected by a narrow gauge railroad from Santa Maria until 1934. Back then, Mattei’s Tavern was the terminus and overnight stop for weary travelers. Today it is still in operation, and one of the highlights of the area, as a well-respected restaurant and watering hole with historic charm. This is ranching and vineyard country with sweeping views of rolling hills and the Figueroa Mountains. Los Olivos retains its historical charm in its many Victorian-era buildings. The rural yet sophisticated town is filled with galleries, unique shops, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms. After exploring Grand Street’s attractions, sit a while and relax in tiny Los Olivos Park, where the public library is housed in the former Valley Grange building. Los Olivos is just minutes from the world famous Danish tourist town of Solvang, Mission Santa Ines, and the Chumash Indian Casino. Nearby points of interest include...
