The city’s most popular and famous municipal playground is Dennis The Menace Playground located on Pearl Street. The park first opened in 1956 and has undergone four major renovations since then. The park features an old steam engine train that kids and parents can tour and climb on. Plus, there is a swinging bridge, several jungle gyms, giant slides, a maze, a climbing wall, an adventure ship, and more. Always a kid's favorite. Open daily 10 a.m. to dusk......

Located in Monterey State Historic Park, this adobe theater was built by Jack Swan in 1846-47 as a lodging house and tavern for sailors. It was used as a theatre in 1850 when U.S. Army officers from Colonel Stevenson's 1st New York Volunteers produced plays as a money-making venture. Swan built a small stage and provided benches, whale-oil lamps, candles for footlights, and curtains made of blankets. Tickets sold for $5 each. First night receipts totaled $500. Currently closed for repairs.....
