Built by James Stokes in the early 1840’s, this handsome two-story adobe house was home to California's first newspaper, The Californian. In addition, Stokes was a physician, had a druggist practice, runs a general store out of the house and served as Mayor of Monterey. The adobe landmark is now home to Stokes Restaurant & Bar, a fine-dining establishment. 171 years of vibrant history! Stokes, as an adobe landmark in Old Monterey, is the ideal backdrop for Chef Brandon's rustic food. The interior layout of booths and banquettes brings a subtle intimacy to the dining space. The stencil design and decorative painting by artist Daniel Peterson add an ethereal dimension to the building. His "distressed renaissance style of ornamental painting" bathes the building in the gold, sun-drenched warmth of an aged European villa.
