Fun Things To Do in Oxnard, CA

It’s a place where Rudolph Valentino filmed and Clark Gable played. It’s where ocean breezes meet bountiful crops of fruits and vegetables. And it’s a city where the classic embodiment of carefree California beach lifestyle is still fully realized. Just an hour’s drive from Los Angeles, Oxnard has become the easy escape for urban dwellers looking for a slower pace to relax and reflect, and not spend a fortune having to do it. Once called the “Land of Everlasting Summers” by Spanish explorer, Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, the city got its name from the Oxnard Brothers who built a sugar beet factory in 1898. Now, over 100 years later, strawberries have taken root in the area with the city producing more than 20 percent of the state’s crop. Each year, the delicious berry that wears its seeds on the outside, is proudly celebrated at the California Strawberry Festival held the third weekend of May. It its early years, while the city developed its agricultural industry, Oxnard became a favorite of the Hollywood elite. In the 1920’s, legendary actor, Rudolph Valentino filmed “The Sheik” on Oxnard’s beach – a place where he later bought a vacation residence. Clark Gable also became a neighbor and show business style parties became the rage – so much so that the area is known as “Hollywood Beach.” Much of the action today is centered at Channel Islands Harbor, where nine marinas attract yachtsman and visitors alike. The Harbor, known as the cleanest in California, is home to 3,000 pleasure boats and a quaint Fisherman’s Wharf, reminiscent of a New England fishing village. Mouth-watering seafood restaurants surround the Harbor and are easily accessible by car or aboard the Channel Islands Harbor Water Taxi. The water taxi is not only a fun way to get around the Harbor, but also a great way to experience the many flavors of the surrounding restaurants with the Progressive Dining. Visitors are escorted to three restaurants to experience an unforgettable evening on and off the water! The newly renovated, Marine Emporium Landing, offers all types of water sports from kayaking & electric boat rentals to segways plus the popular Seafresh Restaurant and Moqueca Brazilian fare. At Fisherman’s Wharf, visitors won’t want to miss the Ventura County Maritime Museum, which chronicles the saga of ships and the sea. Admission is free. Every Sunday, Channel Islands Harbor boasts a Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the water’s edge. Oxnard’s fresh produce from the outlining fields, in addition to arts & crafts and baked goods, can be found there.
