Two blocks from the Museum at the foot of 17th Street, this landscaped community park with sheltered beach cove is ideal for picnicking, fishing, swimming, surfing, bird watching and general wildlife viewing. Lovers Point is a marine protected area so please refrain from sea shell collecting and fishing.

During their over wintering season from mid-October through mid-February, clusters of monarch butterflies can be viewed at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary at 1073 Lighthouse Avenue. With the entrance located just off Lighthouse Avenue, the city park is open from sunrise to sundown and is free for all visitors. The best time to see the Monarchs is noon to 3:00 p.m. when the sun is shining brightest on their trees and when a docent is always on duty.

The aquarium’s permanent exhibits and galleries highlight the colorful and complex array of marine life found on California’s central coast, from coastal wetlands to the open ocean and deep sea. Special exhibitions feature marine life from around the world. The four largest exhibits are the Outer Bay (1 million gallons), the Kelp Forest (335,000 gallons), Monterey Bay Habitats (326,000 gallons), and Sea Otters along the Rocky Coast (55,000 gallons).

This is the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast. Since February 1, 1855, its beacon has flashed nightly as a guide and warning to shipping off the rocky California coast. Alcatraz Island Lighthouse preceded Point Pinos by 8 months, but was replaced in 1909 by the expanding military prison.
