A few miles above Sacramento, along State Highway 50, lies the city of Placerville. This jewel of El Dorado County is 5.8 square miles of pure historic ambiance. Named for the placer gold deposits found in its riverbeds and hills in the late 1840s, Placerville is rich with Gold Rush heritage. True to the nature of nineteenth century towns, most of the culture is centered in the heart of the city: downtown Main Street. Here, visitors can enjoy art galleries, antique and specialty shopping, and cuisine at a number of cafes and restaurants. Also, while strolling along Main Street, be sure to take note of the historical markers that depict events or persons of importance during the Gold Rush era. The history aficionado will certainly appreciate the Bell Tower, which was brought to the city in 1865 as a way to alert citizens of the threat of fire.
