Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is the location where James Marshall found flecks of gold in the tailrace of the sawmill he and John Sutter were building. This discovery in 1848 changed the course of California's and the nation's history. The park is located in the town of Coloma, just a short distance from Placerville. There's a replica of the original sawmill and over 20 historic buildings, plus a statue of James Marshall, California's first historic monument.
