The Santa Barbara Mission was established on the Feast of Saint Barbara, December 4, 1786 and was the tenth of twenty-one California Missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. More than 200 years later, the Mission continues to be the chief cultural and historic landmark in the city of Santa Barbara. The Mission's commanding position and grand proportions, graceful lines and soft, blending colors all reinforce her title of, "Queen of the Missions."

Stearns Wharf is California's oldest working wharf. In 1872 construction was completed on the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Named for its builder, local lumberman John P. Stearns, the wharf served the passenger and freight shipping needs of California's South Coast for over a quarter century. Founded April 21, 1782, the Santa Barbara Royal Presidio was the last in a chain of four military fortresses built by the Spanish along the coast of Alta California, then a wilderness frontier. Today, only two sections of the original Presidio quadrangle remain: El Cuartel, the family residence of the soldiers, and the Canedo Adobe. The Presidio is located downtown at the corner of Santa Barbara and East Canon Perdido Streets.

The Santa Barbara Zoo covers 30 acres and is home to 160 species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. More than 500 animals are exhibited in open, naturalistic habitats. Exhibits include the Cats of Africa, Channel Island Fox, the Crawford Family Penguin House, Elephant Walk, the Tropical Aviary, and the Forest's Edge which houses Western Lowland Gorillas.

For almost 160 years the Courthouse has been the home of local government and a place of civic pride and celebration. Visitors from around the world come to see the courthouse, mural room and grounds. Hundreds get married in the Mural Room or in the Garden every year. The Mural Room is the jewel of the Courthouse! The main attraction of the Mural Room is furniture, tile, ceiling and murals. It contains 6,700 square feet of hand painted Groesbeck murals that capture everyone's heart.

The landmark and historic Granada Theatre originally opened in 1924. Recently total renovated, the Granada reopened in March 2008. It is now the cultural and entertainment center for Santa Barbara and hosts the Santa Barbara Symphony, State Street Ballet, Opera Santa Barbara, CAMA concerts, Music Academy of the West, UCSB’s Arts & Lectures Series, a Broadway Series, a Family Series, national and international touring groups and civic events.
