Fun Things To Do in Saratoga, CA

Saratoga was, at one time, a destination for wellness seekers. Its hot springs were of a similar quality and mineral composition to the famed baths of Saratoga Springs, New York. The town, after a succession of names, took the name Saratoga in 1865. A resort hotel was built at the springs for tourists, but burnt to the ground in 1903. Earthquake and fire also took the original Paul Masson Winery. Production continued uninterrupted, even by prohibition, when the winery received a special dispensation for the production of “medicinal champagnes.” The “Chateau” and beautiful gardens are now home to the Music in the Vineyards Concert Series, held every summer. The winery is listed with the National Registry of Historic Places. Today, Saratoga is a quiet and prosperous town, home to Silicon Valley tech workers. The downtown offers a tasty selection of antique shops, French restaurants, and European-themed bakeries. The home of Apple Computer is just up the road in Cupertino. Saratoga is also home to the Hakone Japanese Gardens. The gardens, built in 1908, were inspired by the Japanese botanical displays at the 1915 Panama Pacific Exhibition. There are koi ponds, tea and Zen gardens and a tea museum. Saratoga’s Japanese sister-city, Muko, donated materials for the bamboo gardens. Another worthwhile destination in Saratoga is the Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts and Arboretum. The formal garden and 175 acres of trails lead to lookout points on the surrounding hills. The Mediterranean-style manor house is a center for the presentation of fine arts, music, literature and architecture. Saratoga is located due west of San Jose.
