Born of the Gold Rush of 1849 and named after John Sutter who owned the historic Sawmill where California gold was first discovered, Sutter Creek is steeped in history. Today, visitors can experience hard rock quartz mining by donning a hard hat and taking an underground mining tour deep into the Earth at nearby Sutter Gold Mine. Other sites of historic interest are the old churches and cemeteries that dot the hillsides, and the many magnificent 19th century Victorian homes that were a product of the wealth derived from gold. Sutter Creek sits at an elevation of 1,500 feet in the foothills of the Sierras. Your journey to Sutter Creek will take place on the meandering, back-country roads east of Sacramento and Stockton. Suddenly, the town will appear like magic at the end of a final sweeping curve, as storybook buildings for a bygone era line both sides of Main Street. In autumn, the town is a showcase for the vibrant colors of fall foliage, and in springtime, you’ll marvel at nearby Daffodil Hill, where over 300,000 blossoms attract visitors from around the world.
