More than a memorial to the Donner Party, the park offers camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, water-skiing, and hiking. In winter months, visitors can cross-country ski and snowshoe on trails. The Emigrant Trail Museum commemorates local Native Americans, settlers who emigrated from the east coast in the mid-1800's, as well as the Donner Party, who were trapped by the winter of 1846, resulting in human suffering, survival, and cannibalism.

Donner Lake is a beautiful indigo blue lake that is located a few minutes from town just off Hwy 80. You’ll find well-maintained campsites at Donner Memorial State Park with plenty of hiking trails, plus biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding. The lake provides a public boat ramp, and a public beach at the west end. Visitor can enjoy swimming, windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing, water skiing, and fishing. You'll also find accommodations and restaurants.
