Located in downtown Ventura on Main Street, Mission San Buenaventura was established in 1782. It was the ninth and the last mission to be dedicated by Father Junípero Serra. The original chapel and church were destroyed, and the present mission church was begun in 1793 and completed in 1809.

The Courthouse is an imposing structure that stands guard over the city from the top of California Street and Poli Street. It was designed by Los Angeles architect Albert C. Martin, in 1912. The Beaux-Arts style features neo-classic columns, arched windows, and a terra cotta facade complete with 24 faces of Fransiscan padres, the order that founded the city in 1782. The foyer features an Italian marble stairway and three stained glass domes. A statue of Padre Junipero Serra stands in front.

The Museum’s artifact collections include over 30,000 objects, from Chumash baskets and Mission-era objects to farm implements. The art collection of over 700 pieces features priceless works by local artists, including Beatrice Wood, Horace Bristol, Jessie Arms Botke and John Nava. The museum features both permanent and special exhibitions from world renowned artists in a variety of media.

It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is State Historical Landmark No. 115. The Adobe represents a superb example of a large home from the Rancho Period prior to California statehood in 1849. The home was started in 1847 and completed in 1849 through the efforts of local Chumash people. It was occupied by Don Raymundo, his wife Teodora, and their 21 children until 1899.
