Fun Things To Do in Ventura, CA

Ventura offers a picturesque respite from the hustle of Los Angeles. While there is plenty of action for surfers and shoppers, Ventura provides a chance to relax, stroll the quiet beach or explore the many and diverse Downtown shops, restaurants and art galleries. Like so many towns in California, Ventura’s history dates back to the creation of a mission, in this case The San Buenaventura Mission, serving parishioners since 1782. The grounds and buildings are located in Downtown Ventura and open to visitors daily. There are sights to see right in town, among them, the Ventura Morton Bay Fig Tree, one of the country’s largest, planted in 1874 at a shady corner at Plaza Park. The ornate Ventura City Hall, adobe buildings from the last century and the Albinger Archeological Museum are other interesting stops while downtown. Over at the shore, the Ventura Pier is the lucky spot for fishing, with its own bait shop and cleaning stations. There is also a great restaurant and a snack bar. At Ventura harbor, expeditions depart for the Channel Islands National Park, 22 miles offshore. The islands are protected and pristine, with access by advanced reservation. There are opportunities for camping and hiking, whale-watching and sunset cruises. The beaches are superb, for biking along the beachwalk, and riding the waves at one of Ventura’s famous surfing spots, Volleyball, swimming, camping—or just lounging and sunning.
