Want an exhilarating way to cure your hangover and bring in the New Year? Join hundreds of brave or crazy souls and take a plunge into the cold Pacific Ocean. The annual Carlin Soul‚ Memorial Polar Bear Dip takes place on New Year’s Day in the tiny central coast village of Cayucos, near Morro Bay. Festivities begin at 9:30am and the dip takes place en masse at noon. The exit begins promptly at 12:01 or sooner! Hundreds of people participate every year, and another 2,000 crowd the Cayucos Pier to watch participants run, dive, swim, splash and scream as they enter the frigid water, which averages 55 degrees for the event. Each participant earns a certificate for their efforts (no wetsuits allowed - that's cheating).
